I honestly feel like Erotica is Madonna’s most adventurous album.  Loaded with house, disco and new jack swing, it still stands, in my opinion, as the best dish of artistry she’s ever served up. It was the album that didn’t seem to be focused on just hits and catchy tunes. And, despite the ode to Dita Parlow that is the opening track, this is the one album where Madonna focused more on being a musical artist rather than all the gimmickry, controversy and past model/actress channeling that made her famous. This was her step away from being the pop-video-MTV-generation entertainer to a deeper and more soulful singer. There was more ambition here than she had ever shown. I wish she would have done another album as authentic as this one.
